:- limits of the Colony.
In drawing up the statement of the probable annual cost of maintaining the Hongkong Post Office, I have been guided in some measure by the rates of Salaries set down in the Estimates of the expenditure of the Colonial Government for other departments, and I can only add that although the increases in the salaries of many of the persons employed in this office now proposed, and other expenses make the expenditure about to be £600 per annum more than it is at present, yet the absolute necessity for the servants of the Post Office Department in this Island being put upon the same footing as the officers of other Governmental departments.
has been repeatedly brought under the notice of His Lordship the Postmaster General in London by me, and on each occasion of my so doing, I have accompanied my letter with the favorable opinion of the Officer Administering the Government of the Colony at the time, on the subject, it would therefore appear that the only reason for my representations not having been acted upon, was the contemplated transfer of the office to the Colonial Government, and as this is to take place on the first day of May next ensuing, I trust that His Excellency the Governor may see fit to authorize the expenditure set down in the annexed Statement from that day.
