8. I have daily checked the Shroff's Book, comparing the amount received with the cash Book, when the Fees received and in the hands of Shroff amounted to $100 or $150, H. Gunthorpe took possession, placed them in a Bag with a Memo: of amount and deposited the same in the fireproof safe of Messrs Sand Crawfurd and Company until period arrived (viz 15th and last day of each month) for payment in Treasury.
9. Because at that time of receipt it was stated to H. Gunthorpe that a deposit of $100 had been previously made to Mr Newman, therefore the $100 was endorsed as a memo: in proof that $100 only had been received by H. Gunthorpe.
10. H. Gunthorpe believing such to be the usual course.
