Mr Gunthorpe was consequently paid. It now appears highly probable that some of the missing monies may have formed the fund out of which these salaries were in the first instance defrayed.

I ought perhaps to have mentioned that in the first instance when I went to the Harbor Master's office Mr Gunthorpe denied all knowledge of the Emigration Brokers' Licenses stating that that business was exclusively attended to by Mr Newman and it was not until I discovered a board upon which I found four out of the six names of the men who had applied for Licenses and confronted some of those men with him that he acknowledged at all to have received the License Fees
