It had been made in the Books of the Office. That the Money had not been paid into the Colonial Treasury, and that Mr Gunthorpe declined to pay it in when officially called on to do so by the Colonial Secretary, was further proved, that Mr Gunthorpe first, when questioned by the Auditor General, denied all knowledge of the Brokers' Licenses, withheld all information as to the receipt by him of these Fees, until ...

It was also proved, that Mr Gunthorpe allowed the Monthly Returns of Public monies paid into the Harbour Master's office during February, to be prepared and sent to the Government without containing any entry of these Fees.

Meany circumstances also were brought under the notice of the Council, during the inquiry, which were calculated to cast doubt upon the truth of Mr. Gunthorpe's unsupported Statement - that he had paid these sums to the late Mr. Newman, confronted with some of the Brokers who had paid the money to himself.
