As it may be of use for Your Excellency to be in possession of

correspondence which has passed between the Governor General Laon

and myself on this subject, I beg to

Enclose copies of my letter proposing the arrangement

now arrived at, and

His Excellency's reply agreeing to the

same, together with a Copy of the Deed

of Lease that has

accordingly been

executed between us, the terms of which

will, I trust, receive Your Excellency's

approval. I should also mention that

His Excellency Laon has this morning

forwarded Despatches to the Commandant of the Suc-pang Station, the District Magistrate of the District of Sun-on, and the Deputy Magistrate of the Sub-district of Kowloon, informing

them of these arrangements, and directing them to Cooperate with the British Military Authorities in

introducing better order into that part

of the peninsula which has thus been

placed under our control.

The said Deputy Magistrate has

been instructed to make known

to the Native population of the locality

in question, by

means

of

the enclosed

Proclamation, the circumstance of

their having

now been placed under
