First one knew the name of every person in Canton of any note; he could speak Portuguese, also Chinese, and of course English. After the Petitioners searched No. 1 and 2 Barracoons, this man endeavoured to point out to me the utter uselessness of the Petitioners going to any more Barracoons after it had been explained that the two men I had been looking for had embarked, it was through this man's argument (213) with my guide that I had to go before the magistrate the third time before the Petitioners were allowed to continue the examination of the Barracoons.
