In the seventh
Barracoon I counted thirty
Portuguese, nearly every man
armed with a heavy stick. Going from this to the
ninth Barracoon we met
the
Magistrate who told us we
had seen them all except two.
Either myself or
my
clothes
excited a great deal of interest,
especially
amongst
the
many good
men; many enquiries
were made
after Mr Telles and Câneiro;
that it became quite annoying.
I found it impossible to
get
at
the Coolie brokers' names
as
they
studiously kept
out of my way
and did everything out
that lay
in their power.
Nearly all the foreigners
speak the Chinese language.
As nearly
as
I could judge from their
appearance and
manners,
in general I believe all the
Coolie Brokers to be Portuguese.
Except those keeping No.1 and 2 Barracoons, and they
appear Americans from the slang in their speech.
