Shung Hong in Sam Pa-mun. There we found 190 Coolies. In one room on the left hand side at the top of the first flight of stairs. I saw about 20 men mere Skeletons and filthy in the extreme, some were without trousers and covered with sores, which I believe were occasioned by torturing them to make them say they would go. I am not sure of this but I am afraid it is too true. The wounds looked as if they had been occasioned by torture and my Interpreter had been told by some Chinamen that the practice was not uncommon.
The moment he endeavoured to speak a word to this poor men, he was taken away by the Portuguese, young and healthy looking. The other coolies were new, the whole of whom the Petitioners inspected and a few they questioned. We then proceeded to the eighth Barracoon Sun Ra Hey in Tha Lee Tow. There was only one coolie there. We then went to the ninth and last Barracoon Ye Shung Cha in Sha-Le-Ton-How, There we found 12 coolies with precisely the same Badge.
