159 a case was
7 investigated in which Chinese were charged with kidnapping 124 other Chinese men at Kupchi. The kidnapped were brought here on their way to the Coolie Barracoons of Macao, detained on board a junk under closed hatches, and were in the harbor.
One succeeded in making his escape and sought the protection of the Police who boarded the vessel and found the facts to be as stated. Of the 7 men examined before the Magistrates, 2 were discharged, the case against the remaining 5 being fully proved.
They were handed over under Ordinance 12 of 1850 to the Chinese Authorities of the Kwangtung Province, through General Sir Charles Straubenzer and the Allied Commissioners.
3. The Governor General (Davis) wrote in acknowledgment to state that "the case would receive careful consideration" and that he felt much indebted to the "British Authorities for the trouble taken by them in the matter."
I have since learnt that the 5 men will in all probability be declared guilty, and lose their heads.
