I have only to add that this Colony is now well able to place its Governor upon a proper footing, and I believe if they could be consulted on the subject, a general desire to do so would be expressed by the Inhabitants. On the accompanying sketch however I have not named any Salary for the Governor as I prefer to place the facts before your Grace and to leave it entirely to your decision, simply observing that I think it should depend upon the decision in the case of the Chief Justice. The present Salary of £3,000 was fixed when the Governor's was £6000. When the latter was raised to £4,000, it was recommended that future Chief Justice should receive £2,000, and I believe the recommendation met at the time with the approval of the Secretary of State.
On comparing the Salaries of the Governors and Chief Justices respectively in all the principal Colonies of the Crown, I find the Chief Justice generally receives at the rate of about one third of the Governor's Salary.

I must also leave the Salary of future Chief Justices an open question. Whatever the decision may be, I shall cheerfully submit.
