12th July 1857
His Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies
I have been pleased to grant my application for leave of absence from my official duties for 18 months on medical certificate, for which I have the honor to report.
My departure from Hong Kong was on 5 May, and my arrival in this country was on the 7th Inst. via the Peninsular & Oriental Company's steamer.
In accordance with the regulations, I have enclosed a medical certificate issued by the Colonial Surgeon, which I should have forwarded earlier, but the state of my health and personal circumstances rendered this impossible. I shall forward it at the earliest possible period.
I have the honor to be, with great respect, Your Lordship's most Obedient Servant,
A. W. Atkinson, Acting Registrar of the Court of Admiralty
To His Excellency Sir John Bowring, Governor of Hongkong
