My dear Kingsmill,
I have just received your letter and I must express my deep regret at your early departure which deprives the Colony of your services. As your friend, I cannot help regretting the circumstances that have led to your decision.
In uniting with you in your sentiments, I must fully concur with your opinion regarding the duties heaped upon you, which are arduous and conflicting, making it impossible for you to carry out your responsibilities.
Besides, from what I know of the expenses in this Colony, where living is exorbitantly dear, I consider your salary wholly inadequate to support you as a Government official. As your medical advisor, however, I must view your retirement with satisfaction, as during the last few weeks, I have seen you suffer much from the effects of climate and exertion.
When the summer comes, those suffering from the effects of the climate are likely to experience increased suffering, rendering you unfit for the performance of any duties. I do not hesitate to recommend your return by the earliest opportunity and working in a more favorable climate.
