Dear Tarrant,
I am sorry that your letter of the 16th instant has in some way mislaid, Sir. Bouring's letter to me was dated the day before, & although I shall not doubt soon find it, I am afraid of keeping these papers, as you wished for immediate notice of them.
But I recollect the contents. Duke of Neuratte thought that the imprisonment might be mitigated
1. Because the jury (or a large number of them) applied in favour of such mitigation.
2. Because he himself (Duke of N.) had exercised similar lenity in the case of der Murrougt.
3. Because he did not altogether admire Mr. Caine's conduct, and in particular his having long remained silent under the charges brought against him.
The first is of considerable reason so far as it goes, it is valid
