(Extract from the China Mail.)

We have received a very satisfactory report on the state of Public Education in the colony, of which we now publish the Statistics; and consider great praise is due to Mr. Lobscheid, the Inspector of the Government Schools, under whose guidance so much has been done to promote instruction of the Chinese population. It will be observed that the Government Grant, which down to 1850 was only £75 a-year, has been augmented to £1,500 for 1859. There is reason to believe that the census for this year will not be less than 90,000. English is taught in the following schools-Tai-ping-shan, West Point, Sheung-wan, Chung-wan, Bowrington, Wong-nei-chung, Tang-lung-chau. Where there are two schools in one place, one is for the Punti, and the other for the Hakka dialect :-
