has ever been submitted for ratification. The trade (created by that Treaty) is already of vast amount, and is susceptible of large extensions: 195 square-rigged vessels were engaged in the Bangkok commerce during 1858; previous to the Treaty the average number was only six vessels yearly.
I was nominated to the Canton Consulship in 1849. I was made in 1853 Superintendent of Trade and Plenipotentiary to China; and in 1854 I was appointed to the Governorship of Hong Kong and the Chief Superintendency of Trade.
That the prosperity of the trade with China has not suffered under my superintendency, the accompanying document (A) will afford abundant evidence:—Independently of Bullion and Opium, which represent a greater amount in money value than all other exports and imports together, I found in 1854 an Import trade of 5,457,708 dollars; I left in 1858 an Import trade of 32,099,226 dollars. I found in 1854 an Export trade of 20,094,286 dollars; and in 1858 the trade amounted to 49,564,182 dollars.
