Not wishing to occupy space unnecessarily, for the present, merely remark that, for corresponding with the "Chun-quick-tock" ( "Tsun-quei-teck) the Sunore, whose officer, the late Mandarin of "pirate, named "Thu-Ahquai, is mentioned in those Memoranda, a Hong Kong chairman was, in 1857, prosecuted before the Supreme Court, and convicted of High Treason.
This Tsun-quei-tsite was the President of the Ponti-Barbareare Board of the Revane ohing Province. By him the assassins and incendiaries were organised from Sunon against Hong Kong, during the war then raging.
I presume, Sir, that you will be of opinion, after reading these Memoranda, that Mr. Caldwell is disqualified, by his pecuniary connections, innocent or innocent it matters not with a convicted Chinese pirate, and that his continuing zeal for that pirate after the discovery of those entries, his endeavors to obtain the convict's pardon and, above all, his false "Report of the nature of the entries so discovered, constitute at least strong moral proof of crime.
It is unnecessary for me to carry the Case further.
Before I conclude, I must, with reference to your letter of the 30th ulto, draw your serious attention to the extract from the Hongkong Government Organ of the 20th April last, just received by me, from a gentleman there, who vouches for its authenticity. It contains the official declaration (in English and Chinese) of the Sunore Battalion Commander of 21st March 1859.
