I am instructed to inform you that in reply to your former letter of the 17th May, you applied for an opportunity of learning the reason, if any, by which there was justification for the correspondence in Downing Street. "I understood this to mean that you wished to see the correspondence between this department & Sir J. Downing." I have now obtained the Clerical papers on the matter and I am to state that you will feel that the correspondence was sound & fair.

In my letter addressed to you on this subject on the 20th May, it was stated that the word "this" was cancelled & substituted with the word "this defendant." I cannot understand the purport of this. I am to undertake that there will be no incommoding of you from public or official employment, in consequence of the said correspondence.
