to refresh the officers' memory of the proceedings, alleged to have been taken, in the matter.

The
Tatparstant Magistrate, M. Dunman, who perfectly remembered the circumstances of case, and M. Woods the principal lawyer (formerly chief-clerk,) whose recollection exactly tallied with that of the Magistrate, informed me that there was no hope of my being
able to obtain the
documentary evidence which I sought.
They
were not quite
nor could
sure that any had ever
existed ; as the crime was compounded, by "friends" of the culprit, very soon after the menace of
criminal process came to Caldwell's knowledge: They positively stated, Whether the warrant had been issued, or the preliminary information, upon which it was actually, reduced to writing.

At any rate, they said, the police records, of that period had been so 'ill kept, that whatever papers there might...
