request of the Owners of certain houses rented by this Department for the

- payment of the Police,

and other rates to which it

has been judicially decided

that the houses are liable

Mr. Herbert begs you will direct the attention of His Grace to the War Department letter of 30th June 1858 Mong Mong ?

on the subject of

a certain head-

rent which had been paid

under protest, and to your letter

99.

and

6290/58.

of the 30th July last in which you state that the Lord of

Newcastle has instructed the Colonial Government to exempt the premises in question from head rent and refund the amount

Mr

6148/59

Mr. Herbert understands

from

said letter, and

this decision that His Grace concurs in the equity of the principle of exemption claimed in the above quote: requests that such measures, as may be considered desirable, be taken to put a stop to these reiterated attempts, on the part of the Colonial Authorities, to subject the Imperial Revenues to contributions to the local expenditure of the settlement

If, as is asserted in the correspondence, the charges

on this hired

property

are such as

should

be borne by the tenant, and the tenant be exempt, such

exemption becomes of no

avail
