Prevalence: but they are at a loss to understand the effect which he anticipates from the adoption of the denomination of the dollar in the public Accounts, if payments may still be made in British money - They are inclined to think that the apparent inconsistency of the opinions expressed by this gentleman may be explained by his fear, that an alteration of the legal tender would lead to a revision of "the relative value of the dollar and "the Sovereign", and of "the Official salaries and of the entire financial arrangements of the Government," a proceeding for which "he sees no necessity."

My Lords can quite understand that so inconvenient a change would outweigh in the minds of the public servants the advantages of a well-defined and conform system of currency: but their Lordships are not of opinion that the revision anticipated and deprecated would necessarily follow the proposed alteration of the Currency - They consider, on the contrary, that as the course pursued for obtaining the payment of the local revenues in dollars has practically given the public servants the payment of their salaries out of those revenues in like coin at certain fixed rates, the assimilation
