I am directed by the Secretary of State for India in Council, to acknowledge the receipt of your Letter dated the 22nd Ultimo enclosing a communication from the Treasury relating to a proposition to coin Dollars for circulation in China, and requesting to be informed whether the Calcutta mint could be made available for coining the Dollars. In reply, I have to acquaint you that at present the mint at Calcutta does not possess sufficient power to perform all the work required of it, and could not therefore undertake the coinage of Dollars. A new Copper Mint is in course of provision for Calcutta, and alterations and improvements are also being made to the existing mint there. These works will not however be completed in less than twelve or fifteen months.
