Mr. Merwale was also pleased to add that the Jurisdiction over British subjects in China was provided for by the Acts of Parliament - 37.1) M. c. 93. and 6 and 7 Vic. c. 80

which however the statutes did not appear to bear on the question, as a part of Japan, except perhaps the Southern extremity, being within 100 miles of Chinese Territory.

That so far as the Order in Council invests the Supreme Court at Hong Kong with Criminal Jurisdiction over Offences committed by British Subjects in Japan, or makes Hong Kong the place of punishment of Criminals Convicted in Japan, no Ordinance of the Legislative Council at Hong Kong nor any further Act is necessary.
