Colony, which was not sanctioned till a year and a half afterwards by the Secretary of State, that he should receive compensation for the long interval during which he had thus been kept waiting to know Her Majesty's pleasure.

In answer to this petition Mr. Darrant was referred to the decision conveyed in the despatch to the Governor last quoted. On the 25th of February 1850 another application was received from Mr. Darrant for the payment of the salary which he considered due to him during the interval of the abolition of his office in the Colony and the Secretary of State's sanction of the same, and that, if he could not again be employed in the Public Service, he might be compensated for an abrupt dismissal from office.
