the time communicated
to the Governor, as it was decided that no step
should be taken in the matter until the result of the trial should be made known.
In the mean time,
the Governor in a despatch dated the 14th
of September 1847 notified
his having abolished,
on
the ground of economy, the office that Mr.
Tarrant had held.
The Secretary of State's
approval of this
measure
of the Governor's was likewise withheld pending the result
of the trial.

This trial however never
came on, for in December
1847, Mr. Parker then
acting
as Criminal Crown
Prosecutor moved the
Criminal Court that
"The recognizance in this case be discharged, "there being no sufficient
evidence to substantiate
"The charge," which application was granted
On the 24th of July
1848 The Governor of
Hong Kong forwarded a
Memorial, from Mr. Tarrant praying for
employment
