OFFICE OF SURVEYOR-GENERAL

ESTIMATE OF THE EXPENSE NECESSARY TO BE INCURRED FOR FURNITURE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

PLAN OR DESCRIPTION.

The original intention in the supply of furniture for Government House was that the Lower or public Rooms only should be furnished; it has however been found that, upon the change of Governor not only excessive inconvenience results, but the upper rooms divested of furniture present the unsightly spectacle of a public auction on the departure of one Governor, and the new Governor on arrival finds the whole of the private furniture gone; and every article required for himself and family must either be borrowed hurriedly or newly obtained, which latter, in this Island, it is almost impossible to do, and with satisfaction. His Excellency the Governor having explained these circumstances to the Legislative Council, it was unanimously resolved that all the usual heavy furniture, or what may be termed articles necessary for the upper Rooms, should be supplied at the public expense; and instructions having been given to me to the above effect, the present Report and Estimate is brought forward in support of the charge.
