Case charged since then making the stronger in behalf of the Colonial Government and I am still of opinion that while all Buildings actually the property of the War Department are reasonably exempt from local taxation, private houses in the city or suburbs of Victoria hired by the Military Authorities for temporary purposes are as liable to rates as if they were otherwise occupied.

In forwarding copy of your letter to the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for the Colonies by the mail of the 22nd instant, it will be my duty to add a representation to the above effect.
