by His Excellency the Governor

and

the Naval Commander in Chief to-

assist the Harbor Master in his duties

when the greatest vigilance

was

required

Night and day to prevent the shipping in the harbor being attacked or set on fire

and

for which service I received the thanks

of the Governor in Council) with inducement

to take a favorable

View of my Case; I beg to add that I have been upwards of thirty years in the Navy and 15 as a Master, seven of which have been served in Hongkong and Surveying the Adjacent Coast.

I have the

Master attendant

Should the appointment of Harbor Master

be vacant (as I almost anticipate) by the

time this application shall reach the

Colonial

office, I would give it my strong

recommendation.

Mr. Loney

was

highly spoken of by

Captain Hotham, and other officers of H. M. S. "Calcutta", and gave every satisfaction

to this Government when employed during the troublous season of 1837/1838 in the

preservation of Security and order in Hongkong Harbor

I have always thought and said

that an energetic Master Royal Navy was the proper person to fill this post-

and

from what I have seen of him,

Colonial Secretary
