of Government Schools in this Island, in which he reports a strong
feeling among the Chinese here that Mr. Bruce will be opposed at Tientsin
at the instigation of the Russians and that the French will
give support to Russian interests; also that the Imperial Government is buying over the Rebels in Kwang-
Tung and Kwangson (the provinces west of this) and
urging them to make common cause
against this Colony.
The singular part of this report is that the Chinese should
have any notion of a possible junction between France and
Russia, but I do not on the whole attach much importance to Mr. Lobscheid's information.
