OFFICE OF SURVEYOR-GENERAL

ESTIMATE OF THE EXPENSE NECESSARY TO BE INCURRED FOR

Burial Ground

PLAN OR DESCRIPTION.

2. Kumuous complaints having been made of the desecration of this ground notwithstanding the efforts of the Police proximate. His Excellency the Governor authorised the Estimate expenditure of £200 for its enclosure (Colonial Secretary's Letter No. 203 of 26 March 1859). I accordingly marked out the Ground, and made immediate arrangements for the prosecution of the work which, from the nature of the ground, I decided to execute as follows:

On the North and East a rough punched stone wall 6 feet high above ground and 1' 6" thick set in mortar, having a gateway 14 feet wide hung to tiers 2 feet square.

The B.L.S.&. Lines to be in rough undressed stone, pointed with mortar, of varying heights from 6 to 3 feet and from 3 to 2 feet, which coped with thorough stones set flush in mortar. A portion of the East side on top of a slope, the wall to be rough punched 3 feet high, which together with the first named wall will also have thorough coping.

The work being urgent, I agreed to pay for same at the regular market rates when complete.

Approved,

[Signed] W. Caine
