Mr Inglis has served for upwards of two years, which he has filled effices not only entitles him to the thanks of the Government but has elicited the warmest approbation of the public generally. Mr Inglis was formerly (see Blue Book) in the Service of this Government and has always been regarded as an intelligent, active and useful Officer.
I inclose the "Colonial Secretary's letter in reply to Mr Inglis (also enclosed) notifying the necessity of his departure.
I really feel great difficulty in filling this Gentleman's post but have decided to adopt his own recommendation and to Gazette Mr. Newman to the Acting Appointment, sending Magisterial Cases to the Police font.
I feel bound to further express my conviction, and I do so with much pain, that the disease with which Mr Inglis is attacked is fatal, and I point this out in order that proper steps may be taken in time to secure a thoroughly efficient Officer to replace him.
A young and Active Master from the Royal Navy is the fittest person for the peculiar duties.
