I therefore with all respect request the Acting Governor to forward my remarks to the Colonial Office as soon as may be convenient.

In a Despatch from Sir Charles Fitzroy (No. 81 of 11 October 1850) an address was transmitted from the Legislative Council of New South Wales, praying Her Majesty that appointments to public Offices in that Colony be vested in the local Executive.

In answering Lord Grey, in his Despatch (of the same date and number noted) replies as follows:-

"The existing system also enables Her Majesty's Government occasionally to effect the interchange of appointments between different parts of the Empire, which tend to bind them together, and to promote the welfare of all. I think it very advantageous that it should not be placed out of the power of Her Majesty's Government to confer occasionally upon a Colonist of New South Wales an appointment either in some other Colony or at home."
