letters, the writers of which at the Gold Fields, together with the return passengers from thence, are the instigators of the continuous Emigration,
The Emigrants
more prudent
as a Class
are
certainly
and intelligent than
the lower order of Irish Emigrants,
And as
respects their future prospects,
where they purpose going to, they are
posted in the minutest details
better posted
than the Committee of the Aborigines Protection Society can have any conception,
without conversing with them and appreciating their intelligence
and
ready means of acquiring information
on
the subject.
As respects checking Emigration
here, I would beg to observe that the
Emigrants engage their Passages in their native districts through the Agents of Hongkong Passage Brokers, the character of the vessels and of
the masters in Command are canvassed
by these men, and when a
favourite Vessel
offers, she is speedily filled while an unpopular vessel finds it difficult to get passengers. I mention this last fact
