In addition I have it, on undoubted information that two other Heads of Departments and Members of the relative Council,
Messrs Frith and Rennie, have
made applications to Mr Jay the Inspector General for posts at
other ports similar to that which
Mr. Davies has accepted.
I am not aware
of the
chances which these gentlemen
have of success in their application but I think it
right
to be accounted for by the low rate of Salary under the Colonial Government awarded even to the highest officials
as compared
with the remuneration given to, and the advantages enjoyed
by persons employed by the mercantile firms
In
fact
the
expense of
House Rent, food and other
necessaries
is so great, not to mention
the fact, lest further embarrassment
should await us.
I am not
greatly surprised
at these things, which being part
of life in this Colony
are such as to bear hard on all
Government Servants
from
the
highest to the lowest, and nothing but long service or public interest is
likely to forbid the wish
