Their appearance and from their papers being according to Chinese forms - but the statement of Patt-shing/Take thing went to show that his vessels had been pressed into the mandarin service by the former pirate (now mandarin) Apatsai of Ningpo notoriety, and that they were present and acting under his orders in the attack upon Lorcha "Arrow" at that Portuguese place, and that it was in consequence of this attack that the Portuguese had given him into custody.
Evidence was given by the Interpreter. I again repeat that in the numerous cases regarding pirates which I have had to deal with, I never heard of Patt-shing as a private chief - the Commission might with as much justice blame me for not knowing that the five notorious pirates mentioned by the Interpreter had likewise been in custody and released.
