But I think that the Report of ... being compared with the Books & Papers of ... of the contents made by ... that Mr. Mey's memorandum fully bears out the truth of that Report, and what portion of the memoranda can be construed even into the slightest shadow of guilt failed to discover.. I can only come to the conclusions that Mr. Anstey may, fully believing that the papers had been destroyed with the other papers, and therefore that their real content could never be discovered, made the exaggerated statements drawn to the contents of the memoranda and of my Report on the Books, as well as to the statements of Mr. Anstey and Mr. May on the subject.

And in respect to the Letters of Mr. May regarding the conduct of the latter to the 10th and 18th August 1888.

As to what amount of proof is contained in the memoranda to show Mr. Chow Wong's guilt, I have nothing to do, but I would respectfully beg to state that they do not bear out the statements made in the China trials of the 17th September 1887 upon informations received from Mr. May.

I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient Humble Servant.

PS. I beg to attach an explanation of the different items contained in the Memoranda, in which my character, and the enquiry with the malicious determination to crush my reputation to crust, would respectfully solicit that the attention of the Secretary of State be drawn.
