Mr Caldwell
Contrary to the latest assertions made by Mr Majo in his memoranda, in which his name is mentioned, he gives an explanation for every one of them which is natural and has the appearance of proceeding from a person who is not afraid of having his statements tested.
I phoned and added that it seemed to me clear from Mr Majpownev's evidence (347) on this subject (p 34) that his memoranda established nothing against Mr Caldwell, and therefore that the government had not been under any inducement to destroy papers on that supposition.
The discovery of certain documents does, however, comfort the impression under which my Memorandum of the 4th of January was written. The only circumstance which is inconsistent with this view of the matter is that Mr Wade refers to "Certain important papers" noted in Mr May's "Memoranda" and gravely "reflecting on the character of Mr Caldwell."
