J was a high Resident official in Singapore when I came here in 1834 and was perfectly cognizant of the circumstances under which I left the settlement. The offer must have been made with the full knowledge of Mr. Church, Mr Dunman, and the Members of the Municipal Committee, some of whom, besides Mr Church, and Mr Dunman, were resident at Singapore at the very time I came on to China at the date I have mentioned. I was however compelled to decline the offer having shortly before resigned my situation here and purchased the Steamer "Eaglet".
Mr. Anstey has stated that Fitzpatrick was aware of the facts, and that it was upon his reported statement that he (Mr Anstey) then grounded his faith in the popular and current report - I beg to repeat that throughout the Enquiry Mr Anstey never made reference at all to any such charge, and yet he now states that he then grounded his faith in the Report upon Mr Fitzpatrick's reported statement.
