I find in

the accounts for the

month of July

1853 a written order

from the Secretary

to the Colonial Treasurer

requiring

him to pay the salary of the

private Secretary, on his (Sir John Bowring's ) receipt . In the absence of His Excellency therefore, I am

unable to make any

remarks on this item.
