Encouraged by my colleague in the University, Professor Balfour, I take the liberty of addressing you with reference to John Fror Murray at present candidate for the office of Colonial Surgeon Hong Kong.
I venture to do so, on the admissible ground that besides long training and experience as a surgeon, and the gaining of the Crimean medal for volunteer military medical practice, Murray has during ten years residence in China, made the Country and people his study.
Whilst at Shanghai he diligently collected samples of all the Natural History objects, & all the objects of art within his reach and from time to time sent them to this country as free gifts to public institutions.
