I shall feel much obliged if you will kindly inform
me whether
any reply has been received
from Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies, in reference to the application,
preferred by me,
relative to a residence
allowance for one.
Or
The difficulty and expense of obtaining a house, for some months past, have occasioned me great inconvenience, and induced me to make this application.

In reply to your letter
of 19th
I have the honor to state that your
application for a residence, or commuted allowance for one, was duly forwarded,
to the Secretary of State, who, in Dispatch N° 23 of 23rd June, called on His Excellency, the Governor for his report and opinion which have duly been sent home.
A subsequent Dispatch was received from the Secretary of State,
N° 4177, 19th September, at which date Sir John Bowring's first reply had not
reached the Colonial Office.
As soon as the decision
of the Secretary of State shall be intimated,
notice shall be given you.
