Letter N 353 of 17 July 1846

acquaints the Senior Masters that the Late the Governor has been pleaid to direct that the Sum of £22.17.3 paid by him as head of Station for the bush quarter
to be refunded to him, and that he was to be permitted to reside in his office Tenement free, in accordance with the Colonial Secretary's letter N 39 of 25 January, subject to the approval of the Home Governments
And I would beg to be permitted to add, that when I was nominated for the situation

Harbor Master and Marine Magistrate at Hong Kong by the Right Honorable the Admiralty, (the Office having been placed at Sir James Graham's disposal by their Majesties Treasury and the Secretary of State for the Colonies) I was distinctly given to understand both at the Admiralty and the Colonial Office, that a residence was attached to the
situation.

The receipt of your letter of the 5 Inst., which will be forwarded to the Home Authorities by
the next mail.
In the meantime the Deputy
the Lieutenant Governor is able to place at your disposal two rooms in the late Harbor Master's Office, which will not be required for Hospital purposes at present, and the contingency of your paying rent for the same will depend on the pleasure of the Deputy the Secretary of State for the Colonies.
