I have the honor to apply for three months' extension of leave of absence from my duties in Hongkong.
When I obtained leave of absence from Governor Sir John Bowring on the ground of urgent private affairs, it was to enable me to bring my wife to England, for the benefit of her health, who had been suffering for fifteen months from mental disease, and whose life much depended on my care.
