6th Dec? 1858,

I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your letter intimating that the 3rd Duke of Newcastle, Secretary of State for the Colonies, is willing to nominate me to the Office of Colonial Surgeon.

In accepting this appointment, I beg respectfully to point out that the restriction against private practice, which was not acted upon by my predecessors, may be reconsidered by the Right Honorable E. B. Lytton. I humbly request that I not be debarred from practice not interfering with my Official duties.

I shall, I trust, be prepared to leave this country by the 25th.
