It affords me great satisfaction to have an opportunity of bearing testimony to the zealous and able manner in which you performed your various arduous medical duties during the many months you were employed under my superintendence in the General Hospital at Balaklava, in 1855-6. You not only performed your duties there to my entire satisfaction, but, from the numerous opportunities I had of witnessing your professional treatment of the sick and wounded placed under your care, I consider you peculiarly well qualified to fill the appointment of Colonial Surgeon at Hong Kong, which you tell me you are soliciting at present, and I can conscientiously recommend your claim to the favorable consideration of the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for the Colonies. It will afford me sincere pleasure to hear that your application has met with the success which your abilities merit.
