3. I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letters of the 20th April & 24th July on the subject of payment of salaries, and to state that it has been usual in other parts of the world. In 1848, Justices were duly rewarded to this Government by H.M's Secretary of State for the Colonies.

That a vacancy has occurred in the office of Colonial Surgeon at Hong Kong, by the death of Dr. Fraser, I beg to intimate that I am desirous of obtaining that Appointment - and will very soon take the liberty of submitting further evidence of my qualifications to your Office.
My application for the situation is founded upon my long residence in China and my intimate knowledge of its Climate and diseases.
