I am very reluctantly again venturing to trouble your Lordship, with reference to the hardships inflicted on me in the stoppage of my half salary for the three months' extension of leave. I have to state what I have aforesaid, and other circumstances mentioned, that secured the thanks of the government for the hospitable treatment. I resided at the critical period when things were at a crisis, my house was open to those who had no place to lay their heads, and it was a time of great trouble.
