Sent out to surgery, after several years of ministerial labour, a strong willing and shout seeing to work and determined to remain in the Colony. I did not leave it of my own will nor for my own pleasure - Nor did I relinquish any duties till ordered by the Medical Authorities, continuing to discharge them, was at the risk of my life.

With reference to the objections expressed by Governor and the Bishop, I would beg to state that the difficulties which they anticipated as to supplying my place, have not recurred. As Chaplain to the Forces all the Civil, Military, and Naval, where I have been there Chaplains, and stations made in the Colony of Hongkong: I may state that the services of the Rev. Charles Bridges Ammstead, who kindly rendered his assistance, in supplying my place, have rather ceased, I do certify that my absence would be unreasonable or prolonged, and to show that no serious inconveniences has resulted from it.

And also, such being the case, to express and respectfully state, that the usual extension of leave and allowances of half salary, granted I believe, to all who have suffered from the climate of Hongkong, should not be withheld in my case.

I beg to transmit a certificate from my Medical attendants as to my present state of health.
