Scarborough.
April 1st 1858.
I much regret not having been able to send an earlier reply to
Harley & Co.'s letter of 22nd March 25th as it reached me a few hours after I had left for the north and I did not receive it until I arrived here this morning.
In my former letter to the office I mentioned the probable time at which I could be ready to sail for Hong Kong. But so much time in England (after my arrival) has been taken up with attendance on my father during a long and severe illness, that I find I shall scarcely have everything ready soon: and have therefore to request that Her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies will be pleased to allow me to delay my departure until the 18th inst. or, however, it be really necessary for me to leave England by the first mail this month, you will much oblige me by sending a telegraphic message to that effect at your earliest convenience. The expense of which, I shall of course be glad to defray.
I have also to request that you will inform me who this postage money must be paid to on my arrival in Hong Kong.
My 2nd share of my London allowance may be deferred still, if you may warrant to me the amount by Smith, Colonial Office.
I beg to enclose 30/- the Stamp Duty required.
Your most obedient Servant,
Watbarland.
