Sir,
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of yesterday's date informing me of my appointment to the office of Colonial Surgeon of Hong Kong at a salary of £800 per annum and have to request that you will tender my best thanks to Mr Secretary Labouchere for his favourable consideration of my claims to the appointment.
With reference to the time of my departure from England, I beg to say that I had intended to leave by the first Mail in April which I trust will be considered sufficiently early.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
H. Merivale, Esq.
Under Secretary of State for the Colonies.
Your obedient Servant,
W. Harland.
