Years. I was compelled in

March last to Memorialize His Excellency The Governor to grant

me Twelve Month's

leave of absence from the Colony,

to humbly crave the attention

of Your Lordship and Sincerely beg Your Lordship may be pleased to take

my Case into favorable considerations and procure my nomination to some appointment

for the purpose of returning to England and deriving benefits therefrom. Since

my arrival here I have placed myself under the Care of Dr Gull for treatment and he having stated that, in his opinion my return to Hong Kong will in all probability cause a relapse of the Disorder from which I am still suffering and be attended with great danger, I am influenced to accept an available Appointment in London in lieu of resuming my Duties at Hong-Kong, thereby avoiding those risks with which I should otherwise be threatened.

I have the honor to be Your Lordship's most obedient & humble Servant

Hemy Gunthorpe

(Chief Clerk to The Harbor Master Hang-Kong.)
